Pt100/Pt1000 platinum thermal resistor or NTC thermistor?
Pt100/Pt1000 (positive temperature coefficient)/NTC (negative temperature coefficient) resistance thermometers are widely used in the industrial field for medium and low temperature zone measurements. The process control industry almost entirely uses Pt100/Pt1000 platinum thermal resistors as temperature measuring elements, but NTC thermistors are usually used in the machine manufacturing industry based on their price advantage. However, due to the use of thin film technology, the platinum content of the temperature measuring elements Pt100 and Pt1000 can be reduced to a minimum, so the price difference with NTC thermistors is greatly reduced. For medium-volume orders of temperature measuring elements, Pt100 or Pt1000 can be considered to replace NTC. More importantly, platinum thermal resistors have many significant advantages over negative temperature coefficient thermistors.
Pros and cons of different temperature measuring elements
Pt100/Pt1000 platinum thermal resistors comply with international standards (IEC 751 / DIN EN 60 751). In contrast, due to factors such as materials and production standards, NTC semiconductor components cannot be manufactured in a standardized manner, so their interchangeability is poor. The advantages of platinum thermal resistors also include: long-term stability and better temperature cycling performance, a wider temperature measurement range, and high measurement accuracy and linearity. NTC thermistors can also achieve high measurement accuracy and linearity, but only within a very limited temperature range. Pt100/Pt1000 platinum thermal resistors manufactured with thin-film technology are suitable for temperatures up to 500°C, while standard NTC thermistors are suitable for temperatures up to 150°C.
Influence of lead wires
The resistance of the lead wires affects the measured value of the two-wire temperature sensor, which must be taken into account. For a copper cable with a cross-sectional area of 0.22 mm2, the reference value of the influence of its resistance on the temperature measurement accuracy of the pt100 platinum thermal resistor is: 0.162Ω/m→0.42°C/m. The influence on the temperature measurement accuracy of the Pt1000 platinum thermal resistor (0.162Ω/m→0.04°C/m) is 10 times smaller. Compared with the base resistor R25, the lead resistance has a much smaller effect on the NTC thermistor, but according to the NTC thermistor temperature characteristic curve, this effect will increase in a disproportionate manner at higher temperatures.
Summary
In the case of large-volume orders, it is still advisable to use NTC thermistors based on cost considerations. For small and medium batches, it is recommended to choose platinum thermal resistors. Pt1000 platinum thermal resistors manufactured using thin film technology are the best choice. It will not bring too much cost increase, but can greatly improve the product measurement accuracy and other performance.
